pounds 5m bill to jail terror plot gang.

Byline: By SARAH JELLEMA

THE trial of eight ruthless al-Qaeda terrorists who plotted mass murder in Britain and America cost UK taxpayers more than pounds 5million in legal aid.

London-based cell boss Dhiren Barot and his seven henchmen were jailed for a total of 166 years over plans to blow up trains, buildings and a tunnel under the Thames.

But it was two years before the gang was finally sentenced - and the defence bill hit pounds 5,007,645.

The Legal Services Commission said: "Our justice system and the principle of a fair trial requires people are not prejudged and should have legal representation regardless of whether the decision is unpopular."
