pounds 50m in cash available to revive green space.

COMMUNITY groups in Huddersfield have been urged to apply for grants under a new pounds 50m scheme.

The Big Lottery Fund is providing the cash for Community Spaces, a programme managed by Groundwork UK on behalf of environmental bodies, including the Civic Trust, the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers and Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens.

The funding will allow groups to create or regenerate local spaces to provide play areas, community gardens, parks, wildlife areas, ponds, courts, village greens and paths.

The Civic Trust manages the Green Flag Award scheme which last year recognised 554 good quality green spaces across England and Wales. Friends' groups and other volunteer groups will be eligible to apply for lottery funding.

Civic Trust spokeswoman Julie Bustos said: "We are appealing to all community groups out there to get their share of funding and boost the fantastic work they are already doing."
