pounds 45m deal for Guinness Book.

The media company behind Thomas the Tank Engine, Sooty and Captain Pugwash has snapped up the rights to the Guinness Book of Records.

Gullane Entertainment, based in Southampton, has bought the Guinness World Records business, which includes the British Book of Hit Singles, from drinks group Diageo for pounds 45.5 million.

Although Diageo owns the Guinness brewing business, Gullane will keep the name for use with the world records title, which has sold more than 80 million copies.

Gullane said: 'Intellectual property like this does not come up very often.'
