pounds 400 In Car Park Taxes?; Political Stories That Affect You.

Car drivers may have to pay a tax every time they park at their office or a supermarket it was reported last night.

Transport supremo John Prescott is said to back the new parking tax which could cost workers pounds 400 a year.

The parking charge is aimed at getting Britain's 26 million drivers off the roads and on to trains and buses.

Supermarkets and superstores will be taxed for their acres of free car parks and the tax could be passed on to customers as parking fees or in higher prices.

The Inland Revenue will view free office car parks as a perk and tax workers between pounds 100 and pounds 400 a year.

A spokesman for the Treasury said: "The Government paper on integrated transport policy is not due until next spring, so this is very early speculation."
