pounds 3M FOR DI'S PEARL AND DIAMOND NECKLACE; She wore it on final public date.

A PEARL and diamond-encrusted jewellery set worn by Princess Diana on her last public appearance is expected to fetch up to pounds 3.5million at auction, it emerged yesterday.

The Swan Lake Suite was custom-made for her by Crown jeweller Garrard, knowing of her love of South Sea Pearls.

In spring 1997, Diana wore the necklace - with a simple blue silk shift by designer Jacques Azagury - to a special performance of Swan Lake at the Royal Albert Hall.

As the earrings were not yet complete, Diana wore a pair from her personal collection.

She never had the chance to wear the complete jewellery set before she died in August that year.

Now the full set is to go under the hammer at The Ultimate Auction in Los Angeles next month. It will be filmed for an American TV show hosted by Fergie.

Bids can be lodged on the Internet on www.livebid.com as well as at the auction, to be held at a venue in LA which is being kept secret for now.

Other items for sale include the world's only known skeleton of the dinosaur Pachycephalosaurus wyomingensis and the only postcard from the Titanic.

And the world's first spacecraft designed to successfully orbit and return to earth is also to go under the hammer for an estimated pounds 5million.
