pounds 3K FINE OVER POOR LEVELS OF HYGIENE AT CURRY HOUSE.

THE owner of an Indian restaurant in Coventry has been ordered to pay more than pounds 3,000 after being prosecuted for poor standards of hygiene.

Mohammad Balal Khan, owner of Cafe Khan in Foleshill, was fined at Coventry Magistrates' Court after pleading guilty to five food safety offences which environmental health officers said put customers at risk of food poisoning.

They included evidence of cross contamination and poor hand washing facilities.

The substandard levels of hygiene came to light during a visit to the 24-year-old's premises in Foleshill Road in June this year by officers from Coventry City Council's environmental health team.

They found the cleanliness of the business was poor and there was evidence of cross contamination between raw meats and ready to eat foods.

It was also noted that the hand basin in the kitchen was not in use as there was no soap or a hygienic method of hand drying available.

A hot water supply had not been provided to the hand basin which led officers to question the effectiveness of the hand washing that was taking place.

Officers instructed the chef in charge of the business to make improvements to food storage conditions, cleaning and food handling practices.

They revisited the business two weeks later and found that considerable improvements had been made.

Councillor Rachel Lancaster, chair of Coventry's Community Safety Scrutiny Board, said food hygiene issues are taken extremely seriously by the City Council.

"In this case there were cross contamination issues," she said.

"The cross contamination of bacteria can lead to food poisoning.

"Consequently a large quantity of ready to eat food was disposed of, removing the potential risk to public health." Coventry Magistrates fined Khan a total of pounds 500 per offence.

Khan was also told to pay pounds 766 costs and a pounds 15 victim surcharge.
