pounds 300k cigs are seized.

CUSTOMS officers have found a pounds 300,000 cache of contraband cigarettes.

The 1.5 million Superkings cigarettes were found hidden in a consignment of carpets arriving from Belgium.

A Revenue Commissioners spokesman said that tax lost to the exchequer on that number of cigarettes would total pounds 222,000.

The consignment was discovered in a shipping container at Tivoli Docks in Cork and the seizure was made as a result of a routine search.

Although Gardai have managed to curb the open sale of illegal cigarettes on the streets, many tax-free cigs are being delivered directly to smokers' doors in several Dublin suburbs.
