UK artists' self-protrait Paintings and drawings by artist Robert Lenkiewicz, who once embalmed a tramp's body, sold for a total of pounds 781,140 at auction yesterday.

A total of 155 works by the Plymouth-based artist, who died aged 60 in August last year, had been expected to make around pounds 500,000 when they went under the hammer at Sotheby's.

The top price was pounds 28,800 paid for a Lenkiewicz self-portrait -a work which was expected to sell for up to pounds 3,500.

'This is a world record auction price for the artist,' said a Sotheby's spokesman. The previous best auction price for his work was pounds 13,000.
