A small engineering company has won a pounds 1m contract to supply parts for war weapons.

Springwell Precision Engineering in Washington has won the deal to supply sighting systems brackets for a shoulder-mounted missile launcher which will go into service in Britain in 2006. It is the first major military contract won by the firm, which employs 11 people.

The NLAW is being developed by Swedish contractor Saab Bofors Dynamics and the contract with Springwell is expected to last over five years.

Springwell managing director Phil Gatens said: "I'm confident we will be in a position to win more business in the future based on this programme."
