pounds 1m FOR STEPHEN GATELY'S PARTNER; Boyzone star died without will.

Byline: Mark McGivern

BOYZONE star Stephen Gately's partner is to inherit pounds 1million from the singer's estate, it emerged yesterday.

Stephen, 33, died at his holiday home in Majorca last October, apparently without leaving a will.

It was revealed yesterday that he left pounds 3,308,670 in the UK, reduced after liabilities to pounds 1,489,820 - although it is believed the Dublin-born star had assets in Ireland and elsewhere.

Under intestacy rules, his partner Andrew Cowles will inherit nearly pounds 1million and the restwill go to hi s parents, who live in a council house in Dublin.

Andrew, 32, was reported as saying last year that he would not accept any money left to him. He believed that Stephen had left a will with a London law firm but a search failed to turn up any documents.

Probate for the estate was granted to internet entrepreneur Andrew, who was introduced to Stephen by Elton John, at the High Court in London on Tuesday.

Under English law, when someone dies without a will, the first pounds 450,000 should go to a person's spouse or civil partner.

If they have no children, the rest is divided up equally, with half going to the spouse or partner and the other half to surviving parents.

Stephen, who married Andrew in a civil partnership ceremony in 2003, died of a previously undiagnosed heart condition after a night out in Majorca.
