pounds 10k malt is dram expensive.

THE last bottle of what the makers say is the world's oldest single malt whisky was put up for sale yesterday. The Glenfiddich Distillery are sending their Rare Collection 1937 to the Duty Free shop at Hong Kong's Chep Lap Kok Airport.

It is a major gateway for international travellers and the distillers are confident the 64-year-old malt - which has previously been sold at the distillery for pounds 10,000 a bottle - will attract considerable interest from collectors.

Glenfiddich malt master David Stewart said: 'There are a lot of mixed emotions here.

'On the one hand, we're extremely proud of having produced a whisky of such a fantastic quality that's stood the test of time. On the other, there's a tinge of sadness saying goodbye.'

The bottle is the last of six bought by Sky Connection, who run the airport's duty-free shop.

Baker Salleh, chief executive of Sky Connection, said: 'We are committed to having the world's best at our duty free shops.'

Just 61 bottles of the malt were produced from a single cask at the distillery in Dufftown, Banffshire, and released in 2001.

It is walnut in colour and has been described as having 'chocolate and treacle' flavours.

Rory Steel, of distillery owners William Grant & Sons, said the malt had already sparked interest.

He said: 'I have heard a Chinese pop star is interested in buying one of the bottles but that is as much as I can say at the moment.'
