TOTTENHAM supremo Daniel Levy will ask Liverpool to pay a staggering pounds 20million for striker Jermain Defoe.

Defoe has emerged as a shock target for Kop boss Kenny Dalglish as he looks for a goalscorer to solve his problems up front - as Mirror Sport revealed yesterday.

However insiders close to the deal reveal hard-bargaining Levy is looking for double the pounds 10m fee being mentioned on Merseyside.

Spurs were quoted a stunning pounds 22m by Marseille for Frenchman Loic Remy, a valuation that has put off Levy and forced him to hike up his own players' prices.

Levy also rates Roman Pavlyuchenko in the pounds 17m class despite his infrequent appearances in Harry Redknapp's side. However Liverpool's interest in Defoe could yet see Spurs bring in one striker and let out another in the last fortnight of the market.

Remy, meanwhile, has told Tottenham to forget about signing him. The 25-year-old Marseille hitman smashed both goals in his club's 2-0 win over French champions Lille on Sunday night to enhance his growing reputation. -old ed s he ted: Redknapp was in the stands, but Remy insisted: "I'm staying. I will 100 per cent stay at Marseille until the end of the season and even the end of my contract."

Spurs flier Gareth Bale (above) insists Tottenham are relishing the tag of being title outsiders as they prepare for next Sunday's clash with leaders Manchester City.

Bale said: "I don't think anyone expects us to win the Premier League we're up there on merit League, we're up there on merit and just enjoying our football. As long as we're doing that we'll hopefully keep picking up points.

"We're not getting too carried away. We will take it one game at a time, I'm sure the lads will say that. We know we're playing good football and hopefully we'll keep plugging away and keep ourselves up there in contention.

"It's the middle of the season but it will be a big game, of course, and one we're looking forward to. There is no reason why we can't pull off a result there.

"City still have a great squad and a great team and no matter what line-up they put out it will be difficult to play against.

"We know we have to play our best football to beat them. I'm sure it will be a great game."
