JONATHAN EDWARDS attempts to win his first World Championship gold medal in tonight's action in Edmonton, writes Ian Coyne.

It would be no surprise if he was to collect another gong at 4-11, but an anecdote regarding the athlete from John Regis during an earlier BBC transmission did raise an eyebrow.

Former 200 metre runner Regis admitted that Edwards, with whom he often trains, is a better weightlifter than Regis and can easily beat him in a clean-snatch contest.

Amazing. If both took jobs as nightclub bouncers on retirement, I know which one I would fancy my chances of pushing past if he stopped me for wearing trainers.

But I would be swiftly dispatched to the nearest A&E, so lucky for me then that Edwards looks destined for telly when he quits.

The Beeb will get good value from him, given that as a born-again Christian he would be able to present Songs of Praise when there is no Sunday Grandstand.
