A drunk pensioner sexually assaulted a teenage girl after playing beer pong with her at a 21st birthday party.

John Young, 77, had been at a house party in Falside Avenue, Glenburn, when he pounced on his victim, who TURN TO PAGE 5 FROM PAGE 1 was aged only 16.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard that, during the evening, drunken Young started speaking to the teenager and later assaulted her in the driveway outside the property, claiming he believed she had been coming on to him.

He forced himself on her, kissed her, tried to pull down her pants and touched her inappropriately.

However, when she fought him off and told him 'no', he dropped to his knees and begged her to let him before giving her his address and telling her to come round to his house.

Young, who is 59 years older than his victim, was drinking at the party and had around 10 vodkas over the course of the evening.

He had been talking to the young girl throughout the night and claims they played beer pong together, celebrating by giving each other cuddles if they scored.

Procurator fiscal depute Frankie Morgan told how Young had targeted the teenager outside in the driveway.

Mr Morgan said: "The complainer was then standing in a position with her back against the wall of the house.

"The accused moved in closer. "He placed his hand on her hip and immediately tried to kiss the complainer on the mouth.

"This happened in only a matter of seconds, with the complainer unable to react and was in a state of shock.

"The accused then moved his right hand underneath the complainer's skirt and attempted to pull her pants down.

"The accused then used his hand and handled her intimately.

"This happened all very quickly.

"The complainer pushed the accused's hand away, telling him 'No'.

"The complainer then adjusted her underwear, which had been moved.

"The accused thereafter dropped to his knees and stated to the complainer, 'Please, just let me'.

"The complainer replied, 'No' and said, 'This wasn't right'."

The court heard Young asked her again, but she told him no, before he stood up, moved towards her and forced his tongue into her mouth.

She managed to turn her head away and struggle free, and he stepped back and apologised.

But, as she made her way back towards the house, he told her his address, adding: "If you ever change your mind."

The matter was reported to police and Young was arrested, telling officers: "I'm sorry, I was flattered.

"I thought someone liked me.

"I had too much to drink. I thought she was 18."

Young pleaded guilty to a charge of sexual offences involving the youngster during the incident on July 22, 2017.

He appeared for sentencing after the court had obtained background reports.

Defence solicitor Bob Kerr told the court that Young had misunderstood the situation due to how much he had to drink and his poor grasp of the situation.

He said: "He misread the signals he thought he was getting.

"She was friendly, but that didn't mean anything.

"It would be a sad day if a young person couldn't be friendly to an older person in a social situation without something sexual being read in to it.

"He is not a sexual predator, or a menace or a danger.

"It's been a horrible situation for everyone involved, the young lady particularly, and he tells me he feels terrible about it."

Sheriff Lindsey Kooner told him it was "a serious offence" and described his behaviour as "unacceptable", adding: "You were the grandfather of someone her age.

"I accept you have apologised for your conduct.

"This understandably caused considerable distress."

She placed Young, of Don Drive, Paisley, on the Sex Offenders' Register for two years.

He will be supervised by social workers as part of a Community Payback Order for two years.

He was also given nine months to carry out 225 hours' unpaid work in the community.
