2012 La Vieille Ferme Blanc (PS5.99 down from PS7.49 until November 19 at the Co-op) Ten years ago simple whites from this part of Southern France were hugely unimpressive. Now, the latest techniques build on the typically textured and savoury base of the region's wines with, in this case, a burst of apricot that provides appealing floral touches and well judged acidic balance.

p appe w acidi 2012 Parra Alta Mendoza Malbec (PS5.49 from a list price of PS10.99 until November 12 at Tesco) Frankly, the PS11 list price needs a pinch of salt but this red - from the brilliant Concha Y Toro stable - represents terrific value at just over a fiver. Using grapes from a traditional vine cultivation technique (parra alta), it creates a smooth, deep and rounded malbec with cherry and raspberry fruit, supplemented by suggestions of vanilla, plum stone, cloves - and very light tannin.


cial 2011 Kendermanns Special Edition Pinot Grigio (PS5.99 instead of PS7.49 from Wed until Dec 3 at Waitrose) German pinot grigio has less floral ripeness than many Italian versions but has greater acidity, balance and character. Peachiness is underpinned here with good depth, cooked apple acidity and spiciness.
