nVIEW CORPORATION ANNOUNCES THIRD QUARTER RESULTS
NEWPORT NEWS, Va., Oct. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- nVIEW Corporation

(NASDAQ-NMS: NVUE) today announced sales and earnings results for the third quarter and first nine months of 1992.
Sales for the third quarter of 1992 were $7.2 million, 47 percent above the $4.9 million for the same quarter last year and 11 percent over the prior quarter's sales of $6.5 million. Sales for the first nine months of 1992 were $21.1 million, up 103 percent compared with sales of $10.4 million for the same period a year earlier.
The company experienced a net loss of $282,000, or 6 cents per share, for the third quarter of 1992, compared with a net income of $444,000, or 10 cents per share, for the third quarter last year and a net loss of $483,000, or 10 cents per share, for the second quarter this year. For the first nine months of 1992, the company experienced a net loss of $195,000, or 4 cents per share, compared with net income of $794,000, or 23 cents per share, for the same period in 1991. Per share earnings for 1992 reflect additional shares outstanding resulting from the sale of common stock in a public offering in January of 1992.
Commenting on the company's sales and earnings performance, nVIEW's President and Chief Executive Officer William M. Donaldson stated: "We were pleased to see sales rebound during the third quarter, reversing the slowdown in sales growth in the prior quarter. Conditions which had adversely affected sales growth during the second quarter of this year improved somewhat in the third quarter. In addition, our sales appear to have responded to the sales promotion and marketing programs initiated late in the second quarter, particularly within our domestic markets. Although our efforts to increase sales and broaden our distribution network in Europe have been successful in developing a significant number of new distributor relationships, these efforts have not as yet resulted in increased European sales.
"We were also encouraged by the third quarter improvement in our gross profit margin, which reached its highest quarterly level this year," Donaldson said. nVIEW's gross profit margin of 36 percent for the third quarter of 1992 showed considerable improvement over this year's second quarter margin of 27 percent and slightly above last year's third quarter margin of 35 percent.
Operating expenses were $2.8 million for the third quarter of 1992, an increase of 133 percent over the $1.2 million for the third quarter of 1991 and 8 percent above second quarter 1992 expenses of $2.6 million. For the first nine months of 1992, operating expenses were $7.1 million, an increase of 184 percent over the $2.5 million for the same period last year. The increases in operating expenses were primarily due to continued growth in the levels of marketing and promotion expenses associated with the company's expanded product line, as well as increased research and development costs and higher general and administrative expenses as part of an ongoing program, initiated in the first quarter of 1992, to build a strong infrastructure to support future growth. Expenses also reflected additional costs for the sales promotion and marketing programs initiated in the second quarter of 1992.
In addition, the results for the third quarter of 1992 were adversely affected by legal expenses of $154,000 resulting from a shareholder suit filed on Aug. 18, 1992.
Total assets at the end of the third quarter of 1992 were $29.7 million, compared with $9.8 million at the end of the same quarter in 1991 and $11.6 million on Dec. 31, 1991. Shareholders' equity totalled $25.5 million on Sept. 30, 1992, compared with $8.0 million on the same date last year and $8.5 million on Dec. 31, 1991.
Donaldson added: "The positive reactions we have received from the marketplace for our latest product offerings, the Luminator and nSight, both self contained light source projectors, are especially gratifying. We believe both products in time should become significant contributors to nVIEW's sales revenue."
In an earlier announcement, nVIEW introduced an addition to its ViewFrame Spectra line of active-matrix liquid crystal display (LCD) projection products, the ViewFrame Spectra C. "This latest addition to nVIEW's growing line of high quality projection products sets a new price/performance standard for the projection of computer-based images," said Donaldson.
nVIEW also announced that it continues to receive recognition for its development of high quality, innovative projection products. The company was recently awarded the "Product of Show-Blue Ribbon" in the hardware category at the Informatics '92 trade show in Singapore for the Luminator projector. nVIEW also received the "1992 Readers' Choice" award from Presentation Products Magazine for its MediaPro projection panel, which is the second year in a row that an nVIEW product has received this honor.
Donaldson concluded by saying: "nVIEW has made a significant investment in people, products and promotion in 1992. In return for this investment, we believe the company is stronger, more efficient and better positioned for the future."
nVIEW Corporation, headquartered in Newport News, with additional offices in San Diego, Edgewater, N.J., and Kehlen, Luxembourg, is a leading manufacturer of projection products, utilizing liquid crystal display technology, which are sold through a worldwide network of dealers and distributors.
