motors news: New BMW coupes turn on the style.

BMW is turning on the style with a pair of classy coupes aimed at the connoisseurs.

Priced from pounds 21,585 for the entry level 1 Series Coupe to almost pounds 58,000 for the flagship 6 Series Sport Coupe, the new models are out to cut a dash at both ends of the motoring market.

Looking sleek and sexy is a must for any coupe and both pass the test with flying colours, but BMW has decided to stamp its mark by making them world beaters.

The BMW 123d is fitted with the world's most powerful production four cylinder diesel engine, while the 635d is claimed to be the first luxury 2+2 Grand Tourer to come with diesel power.

The 1 Series Coupe goes on sale on November 24 and to emphasise the importance of diesel engines to BMW, all but one of the six model range is an oil burner.

Yet the solitary petrol version - the 135i - is another first, being the most powerful production car in its class thanks to a twin-turbo, 3.0-litre engine which makes it guicker than a Porsche Cayman S.

The 135i M Sport Coupe - to give it its proper title - costs from pounds 29,745, develops 306bhp, can accelerate from 0-60 in 5.3 seconds, top out at a restricted 155mph and average 30.7mpq.

However, it's the 123d which really stands out. It is still a 2.0-litre but pumps out 204bhp - more than the magical 100bhp per litre - resulting in 0-60 time of seven seconds and a top speed of 148mph.

The coupe is the third version of the 1 Series, the others being three and five door hatches, and somehow feels much more of a driver's car. The slithery, fastback profile suits this car to a tee unlike the rather truncated look of the hatchback versions.

Extras include adaptive lighting and active steering which adjusts the amount of turning input reguired depending on speed.

Such hi-tech features also make their way into the larger 6 Series Coupe which BMW is claiming to be a rival to the likes of the Jaguar XK.

Prices range from pounds 49,300 for the 630i petrol version to pounds 57,745 for the 650i with the 635 diesel in the middle at pounds 53,910 or pounds 56,110 in Sport trim.

The diesel is a tour de force, using twin turbos to develop 266bhp with an average mpg of 40.9. It is a true four seater and with masses of mid-range power, it is a great long distance tourer.
