WHILE you've got the camera in your hand, taking snaps of the summer, capture your kitty for a Cats Protection photography competition, starting on August 28, which will help raise awareness of the important work the charity does re-homing at least 60,000 cats and kittens a year.

Entry for print or digital photographs is free (there's a donation option) and you'll be in with a chance to win pounds 500-worth of photographic equipment. There are four categories: kittens; perfect portrait; best friends and cats will be cats. Your pic will appear online on the website after judging. An entry form is available from the charity helpline on 08702 099099 or online at www.cats.org.uk. Closing date is October 19.

THE sun hasn't made that many appearances this summer. Is it worth investing in some frighteningly expensive designer shades or wiser to grab a pair of Foster Grants from Matalan, Halfords, Lloyds Pharmacies or Sainsbury when the sun eventually pops out? These acrylic giraffe-patterned pair called Cara from the Celebrity range have a UV400 gradient lens with a scratch-resistant coating and are just pounds 9.99.That's well under the usual pounds 100-plus price tag for similar designer styles. See www.fostergrant.co.uk for a full look at ranges available.

THIS pretty charm charity necklace is the result of the success of the charm charity bracelet launched by Wallis two years ago which benefited Cancer Research UK.

This year's version, a long silver rope style, is decorated with six designer or celebrity chosen symbols.

Scarlett Johansson chose a delicate lily in coloured enamels, Catherine Tate a silver heart with a cut-out star to represent open-heartedness, and Kate Moss chose her favourite fashion talisman, a turquoise and silver swallow. Arriving in September, the necklace will retail at pounds 25; pounds 10 of that will go to Cancer Research UK. Also online at www.wallis.co.uk PRETTY Polly has included silver technology in its new Fresh range of trainer socks and fine-denier knee and ankle highs and footsies. Exclusive to the company, Rucosilver creates a "don't understand" environment for microbes, so they don't multiply and start to smell. The knee-highs are pounds 5 and the range is in Boots, Co-op, Morrisons and Sainsbury's.

Also available online at www.mytights.com BACK-TO-SCHOOL stuff stirs something in the minds of those who like to mark the end of the summer holidays with a new handbag and contents. What a good excuse!

Business women find the Filofax range particularly appealing. It's designed for efficiency and image.

The slim briefcase handbag in cherry quality leather is pounds 195 and for inside, the classic organiser is pounds 64.95, the purse pounds 52.50, and the accessory case is pounds 20.95.
