Rin Simpson tried the Dermalogica Medicated Skin Clearing Facial at Laguna Health and Spa in Cardiff

They say Breakouts have finally met their match. Our medicated clearing treatment will focus on purifying your skin with deep cleansing, followed by extractions.

We say As a teenager, I was incredibly fortunate, and rarely got spots. In my late 20s, however, something changed and I now get tiny bumps under the skin on my forehead, and black heads on my chin area, which I just can't seem to shift.

I've heard good things about Demalogica's powers, so decided to skip their prescriptive facial and the sensitised facial, and go straight for the big guns with the medicated facial.

My visit started with a consultation to establish what my problem areas were and how they might be caused by my lifestyle - the spots on my chin are, apparently, most likely caused by stress.

Then I lay back to let my therapist Natalie double cleanse my face, before getting onto the real business, which was purifying and 'extracting' - literally extracting built up dirt and sebum from my pores.

Using at least two products that are so potent they're not available to the general public, my skin was first treated to an enzyme mask to resurface it, then a frothy lotion that Natalie said would open my pores.

Next came the extracting, which I was slightly embarrassed to discover was just a nice way of saying Natalie would squeeze my spots for me. Surely not the most pleasant of jobs for her, though she confessed to quite enjoying it.

Altogether this was not a pampering facial - the mask tingled, the foam tickled, and even the neck and shoulder massage I was treated to while one of the masks dried was, while effective, borderline painful.

Then again, this was never meant to be an exercise in relaxation, but an effective solution to my skin's persistent problems.

After effects My skin felt brand new as I left Laguna, though it was quite dry and felt a little tight. That evening my usual serum felt tingly, and when I applied a moisturising mask the next morning, it almost burned.

I also stupidly forgot that new skin is more sensitive than old skin, so I promptly got a nasty sunburn after spending an afternoon out and about with too little protection on.

Otherwise though, I was pleased to find that my skin looked clearer, and felt smoother to the touch.

The only problem is, there's nothing anyone can do for my continued stress levels, so I'll no doubt have to go back for another treatment some time soon!

The Dermalogica Medicated Skin Clearing Facial costs pounds 49 for a 55 minute treatment. Call 02920 111 110 or visit www.lagunahealthandspa.com for more info
