interQ becomes operator of '.info'.

TOKYO, Nov. 20 Kyodo

interQ Inc., a Japanese registrar of Internet domain names, said Monday it has been designated as an operating body for a new domain ''.info'' that will begin accepting web addresses for registration next spring.

.info is one of the seven new domain names approved last week by the Internet's governing body on Web site names, the Internet Corp. for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

interQ said it has been entrusted to operate .info and to accept registration applications. The domain extension is intended for both commercial and non-commercial use.

The other domain extensions approved by ICANN are:

.name -- a general domain extension intended for use by individuals;

.biz - a general domain extension for businesses;

.pro - a restricted domain extension intended for use by certified professionals and professional entities;

.coop - a restricted-use domain extension for cooperatives;

.museum - a restricted-use domain extension for museums;

.aero - a restricted-use domain extension for the air transport industry.

The introduction of these new domain names is designed to relieve pressure on the overcrowded ''.com'' and other domain names.
