4- inch iPhone SE one of the cheapest &compact in the series

APPLE ' returned' to its roots on Monday as it launched iPhone SE in Cupertino, California. However, before you rush to dump the iPhone 6S and take out your wallet to buy the ' new' iPhone, stop-- the iPhone SE is not a replacement for the iPhone 6S. Instead, it is an update to the iPhone 5S. It not only features a design that is similar to the two- year- old iPhone but also sports a 4- inch screen, which is smaller than the 4.7- inch display of the iPhone 6S. Another big deal about the iPhone SE is its price. This is one of the cheapest iPhones that Apple has ever launched. If not for the iPhone 5C with it plastic body, the iPhone SE could have been the cheapest iPhone. The device is clearly targeted at two types of customers-- those who are still clinging to the iPhone 5S because the iPhone 6S is ' too big' and those in countries like India who find the big iPhones too expensive.

The iPhone SE with its price of $ 399-- lower than ` 30,000-- clearly has a potential to be a super hit in countries like India where consumers crave for an iPhone but can't afford to spend ` 50,000 on it.

In comparison, the iPhone 5C was priced at $ 349 at the time of its launch.

While in terms of form factor, the iPhone SE gives a nod to the past, it is a very powerful phone. Internally, it has a hardware that is mix of what is found in the iPhone 6S and the iPhone 6. It is powered by the Apple A9 processor, which is incredibly powerful.

It also has comotion processor, the same 12- megapixel camera inside the iPhone 6S and features like always on Siri and the front display flash for selfies.

The camera in particular is a surprise because the iPhone 6S camera is the best that Apple has ever put in an iPhone. The fact that company is bringing the same camera to the iPhone SE shows that it is serious about meeting the challenge from phones like the LG Nexus 5X and the HTC A9 that cost less than ` 30,000 and yet offer great set of features and performance.

The Apple iPhone SE will be available starting March 31 in select countries. India is not in the list of countries where the phone would go on sale on March 31 but expect Apple to launch here in the coming months.
