THE parade and Freedom of Entry to the Queen's Gurkha Signals Regiments at Nuneaton on Sunday last was an impressive ceremony. Led by the Regimental Band and more than 120 servicemen with 20 Ex-service with 20 ex-Ex-Service Association branch Standards and a large company of ex-service personnel, the salute was taken by the Mayor, Don Navarro, accompanied by Colonel Duncan Warne, the Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire, Martin Dunne. The Gurkha's were the fourth Regiment to receive the Freedom Honour, following the Junior Leaders Regiment in 1972, the 30th Signals Regiment in 2002 and the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers last month.
TOMORROW No 1 Branch Royal British Legion, Coventry hold the monthly meeting at the Royal Warwicks Club at 11am. New members are welcome and if you serviced in any branch of HM Forces you are entitled to join a branch. For present members, annual membership fee is now due, 11 payable to the branch treasurer.
COVENTRY branch of The Worcestershire & Sherwood Foresters Regimental Association hold their monthly meeting on Monday next at the Nursery Tavern, Lord Street, at noon. Former member of both Regiments are invited to join the branch, now in it's 61st year which I formed in 1949, just two days after my release from the Worcestershire Regiment.
TUESDAY next the Bedworth branch of the Royal British Legion hold a member's meeting, 11am at the Bedworth Ex-Servicemen's Club, Rye Piece, and the Bulkington branch members assemble at the War Memorial Club in the village at 7.30pm. Ex-service personnel welcome to attend.
COVENTRY branch of the RAMC Association meet at the Royal Warwicks Club on Friday next, 8th at 11pm. All members of the RAMC, RADC, RAVC, and the QARANC are welcome and branch detail can be obtained from secretary, Brian Wilson on 02476 273646.
A CHARITY night raising cash for our injured serving troops is being held at the Coachmakers Club, Radford Road on Friday, October 15. It will be in the form of a country and western disco with admission fee paid on entrance. There will be a buffet available and all cash raised will be shared between the charities Troop Aid and Help The Heroes.
A REMINDER regarding the issue of the Veteran's Badge. If you have not received yours yet the Lord Mayor's Office staff would like to help you. An application form can be obtained from the civic business manager, Jane Barlow on 02476 76833100 to whom it should be returned on completion. At regular intervals badge presentation ceremonies are presided over by our Lord Mayor, councillor Brian Kelsey. There are also different application forms for those who were Bevin Boys, ladies who served in the Land Army and Merchant Seafarers' badges.
THIS year's Poppy Appeal Launch will be held on Friday, October 29, at the West Orchard Shopping Centre. Jim Ramsey, BEM can supply, now collecting tins for those good folk who can assist in the Radford and surrounding area. A call to Jim on 02476 596969 will bring delivery of a tin and an ID official collector's badge.
SATURDAY next, the RASC/RCT Association Blitz Night evening will be held at the Royal Warwicks Club, commencing at 7pm. All members and friend swill be made welcome and tickets, at 3.50 each can be obtained from Secretary, Tom Kerr on 02476 361098 or from the club steward.
