echo live: Lose yourself in this fun-filled action hero family adventure; INKHEART (PG, 106mins) *****.

IF you want a square-jawed hero for your family adventure film then pick up the phone and call Brendan Fraser.

Fraser has been the leading man of choice for films such as The Mummy and Journey To The Centre Of The Earth, and he is on similar ground here, albeit more successfully.

The concept is that Fraser's character Mo is a Silvertongue, part of a secret race of people who can bring books to life by reading them aloud.

The catch is that for every character he brings to life, a real person replaces them and is trapped in the book.

Because of this gift/curse, doting father Mo lost his wife Teresa (Sienna Guillory) into the pages of a book called Inkheart many years ago, a secret he has kept from his daughter Meggie (Eliza Bennett).

When Mo discovers a rare copy of the book he believes he can bring Teresa back into his life, but a stranger called Dustfinger (Paul Bettany) appears to warn him about a villain called Capricorn (Andy Serkis) who wants to use Mo's abilities for his own evil ends.

Inkheart is a fun-filled film that rides a nice line between reality and imagination, comedy and drama.

Serkis has great fun chewing the scenery as the bad guy while Fraser resorts to his usual action hero routine.

The largely British cast provide sterling back-up, and you could do a lot worse than spend a few hours in front of this with the kids.
