Fred Cheever (Tim Robbins), Colee Dunn (Rachel McAdams) and TK Poole (Michael Pena) are three Iraq war veterans heading home on the same flight when some contrived dramatic turbulence forces them to head onto the road together to resolve their inner conflicts.
Cheever has paternal responsibilities back in St Louis, while Private Colee and Sergeant Poole are both on leave. She is heading for the desert strip on an emotional odyssey to visit her dead boy-friend'parents, while he's dreading telling his fiancee that the piece of shrapnel embedded in his groin has left him impotent.
Neil Burger's road movie with a comedic tinge features likeable leads who will keep you watching. And as Burger and co-writer Dirk Wittenborn have no obvious interest in making pro or anti-war statements it means the tone is kept light with obvious detours into tears and self-pity.
