MADE IN DAGENHAM **** 15

THIS hilarious and heartwarming tale of female empowerment was inspired by the true story of the machinists who established a precedent for women around the world. Sally Hawkins plays Rita O'Grady who persuades female factory workers to go on strike.

UNSTOPPABLE *** 12

PERHAPS only Tony Scott could make a film about a runaway train such a cinematic rush of blood to the head.

Denzel Washington plays a veteran railway engineer and Chris Pine is the chalk 'n' cheese conductor. Essentially a buddy movie, the pair become allies as they orchestrate a daring rescue plan to slow down the train.

Rosario Dawson as the yardmaster adds light relief. At one point, he mocks the man who let the train get away from him with the put-down, "It's a train, not a chipmunk."

LIFE AS WE KNOW IT ** 12

KATHERINE Heigl and Josh Duhamel play a busy couple who look after the daughter of their best friends after they are killed.

A misfiring rom-com, it deals in too many cliches, such as a clumsy first attempt at changing a nappy that leaves Heigl's spirited heroine with a little more than egg on her face.

MAKING THE CUT

Dark romp has gore and guffaws

MACHETE **** 18

TAKEN with a pinch of salt (and maybe some tequila) this is a gory revenge movie sprinkled with dark humour.

Assassin-for-hire Machete (Danny Trejo) barely escaped death at the hands of drug lord Rogelio Torrez (Steven Seagal) and lives under the radar in Texas.

Desperate to make ends meet, Machete accepts a job from spin doctor Michael Booth (Jeff Fahey) to assassinate xenophobic Senator John McLaughlin (Robert De Niro).

As he prepares to pull the trigger, Machete almost takes a bullet and realises he has been set up.

On the run and with few places to hide, he seeks refuge with his priest brother, Padre Cortez (Cheech Marin), and befriends sassy lady Luz (Michelle Rodriguez), who is rumoured to be the vigilante known as She. Meanwhile, feisty cop Sartana Rivera (Jessica Alba) is determined to bring Machete to justice.

This gung-ho, tongue-incheek romp was expanded from a spoof trailer for Robert Rodriguez's 2007 film Grindhouse.

Lindsay Lohan, as a druggie nympho-turnednun, adds a flourish to the climatic battle scene.

Machete isn't trying to be big or clever.

As long as you realise that, you'll have a good time.
