A MAFIA hitman has been nicknamed the "Pharaoh of the Cosa Nostra" after a gun and a bag of possessions were found in his coffin.

The Italian Carabinieri made the discovery when convicted murderer Agostino Badalamenti's body was exhumed last weekend.

In the style of the ancient Egyptians, the Sicilian killer was buried alongside the items, including a packet of cigarettes.

The Egyptians believed in burying their dead with personal possessions they might need in the afterlife.

At his murder trial feigned madness and 'I want mummy' Badalamenti, who died aged 46 from natural causes in 2005, was dug up after an informer revealed he had been laid to rest with his pistol.

Prosecutors ordered his grave be opened up to carry out ballistic tests on the weapon to see if it was used in any unsolved murders in Sicily.

They said their "new collaborator" Salvatore Bonomolo told them he had inserted a gun and the cigarettes in Badalamenti's cask before burial.

The gun, of Italian manufacture, has now been sent to a crime laboratory for expert analysis. Badalamenti was tried for the murder of Michele Lipari in 1979 but feigned madness in court, at one point yelling out: "I want my mummy."

The mobster dodged a jail sentence and was instead locked up in an asylum, where he was detained for 18 years.

On his release he was recruited back into the Cosa Nostra by Sicilian godfather Bernardo Provenzano.

But he was arrested again in 2003 for extortion and Mafia membership but died two years later.

The forensic team who carried out the "extraordinary exhumation" of Badalamenti's corpse recovered the rusting revolver, a knife and cigarettes.
