Your exclusive beauty and grooming tips from MAC Cosmetics' senior make-up artist, Sunderland-born Caroline Donnelly.

"We have a couple of questions relating to the eyes this week, so I thought, just having come back from Paris Fashion Week, I'd relay these to a trend going on right now.

"One of my favourite trends at the moment, we at MAC have named La Dolce Vita.

"It has a kind of Italian feel to it. It's 60s, but without being 60s, and ravishingly glamorous. That old favourite of pairing a deep linered eye, and a fleshed out lip.

"For a really sexy, glossy version of a Bardot type lip try MAC limited edition Lip Varnish in Softease, Moltobene or Cute yet Sexy for lighter to mid-toned skin and Bronze and Brazen for darker toned skin.

"Look at make-up seen at Karen Walker, Carolina Herrera, D-Squared, Just Cavalli and DKNY for inspiration."

Q: I'd like my eyelashes to look longer without using fiddly false eyelashes and without caking the mascara on so it becomes blotchy - do you have any hints?

A: Yes! You must start by curling your lashes, a lot of people underestimate the difference this actually makes to the eyes and creating a longer lash look. It is also important to use good lash curlers. Do not be fooled into thinking all lash curlers are the same. Have you ever used a cheap pair and then wondered why your lashes seem to be L-shaped rather than curved?

At MAC our lash curler is pounds 12, and comes with a spare rubber strip, which is curved! After you have curled your lashes, prep them. Use Prep and Prime by MAC, it's like putting a little sock round each and every lash, giving them each more length and width. At this point, comb your lashes through as the Prep and Prime will dry, leaving them styled in the way you desire. My very favourite lash comb is by Tweezerman.

Before applying your first layer of mascara, wipe the wand with a tissue. This will help you neatly apply the first layer of colour as it won't build too quickly for you to control. You can then build and build upon this until your lashes look just the way you want them, with no need to add fake ones. I personally like MAC Fibre Rich mascara for length, followed by MAC Pro Lash, or Zoom Lash for volume.

Q: What is the best way to apply eyeshadow to stop it smudging?

A: Use a good base under the eyeshadow, and invest in some good brushes. Mac Eye Paints are the ultimate! Applied sparingly as a base, eyeshadow stays put from morning until bed time. Eye Paint comes in neutral tones, or colours, so the choice is yours. They will slightly change next year, so if you try them and love them, don't worry. We (MAC Pro Team) have been using the samples of these backstage, on ourselves etc, and they are even more fabulous! The other thing to do, is invest in some good brushes. This is absolutely crucial to the look and lasting ability of any make-up.

Don't believe "a poor craftsman always blames his tools"! If you are baffled by the choice of brushes on offer ask. The MAC team will help you decide which brushes you need to create the type of make-up you like. Different brushes do different things, so a little advice may make the choices easier.
