de HAVILLAND ANNOUNCES EXTENDED SUMMER SHUTDOWN

DOWNSVIEW, Ontario, April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- de Havilland Inc. announced today that, due to the lingering effects of the global recession and an agreement with GPA Jetprop to cancel near-term orders and reschedule future options, there will be an extended summer shutdown at de Havilland. The shutdown will be effective from July 5 through September 3.
The manufacturer of the internationally successful de Havilland Dash 8 family of regional turboprop airliners said the move was necessary to minimize long-term risk to the operation and to minimize impact on customers, employees and suppliers.
"I want to emphasize that this is a temporary situation, and that we will resume production in September at our current rate of two aircraft per month," said Ken Laver, president, de Havilland Inc. "We carefully weighed all options available to us, and this will allow us to maintain our full capabilities in design and production, and to avoid drastic cuts to staff and programs down the road."
This action will reduce 1993 production of Dash 8 aircraft by three -- from 24 to 21.
"At the same time, we will maintain our subcontract schedules, which include programs for the Canadair amphibious firefighting aircraft, paint and interior work for the Canadair Regional Jet, design/build work on the Learjet 45 wing and P3C Orion component manufacture," Laver said.
"The signs of economic recovery are starting to be seen, and this action, as difficult as it is, will leave us in a strong position to respond as the market picks up."
de Havilland Inc. is owned by Bombardier Inc. (51 percent) and the Government of Ontario (49 percent).
