closet confidential; Harvey Nichols group fashion director Anita Barr tells MARION MCMULLEN about finding her style and the importance of accessories.

What are you wearing at the moment? I LOVED the Haider Ackerman collection for autumn winter. My style is very androgynous and Haider delivered a cool collection of fitted jackets, perfect tapered black trousers, tie-neck blouses all with a slightly luxe 80s punk feel.

Who's your style icon? I'M A BIG fan of Tilda Swinton, her style is so avant-garde and cool. Her look is individual and bold. I love that she looks equally as amazing wearing a masculine trouser suit or an elegant gown. I also love the unique style of Giovanna Battaglia, a fashion editor who works for W magazine and Vogue Japan. She is so elegant and effortlessly stylish.

What item of clothing do you spend the most on? I ALWAYS invest in great accessories. Boots are my guilty pleasure. It's always the first thing I notice when I meet someone new. It's also not such a guilty splurge as a good pair of boots and a great handbag are probably the items in your wardrobe that get s the most wear, so they're a worthwhile investment.

What is your favourite piece of clothing in your wardrobe? THERE are so many, it's hard to choose one. I'm currently in love with my Roland Mouret Eugene top and my Thakoon Downing bag.

Both are really versatile pieces and are perfect for day to night dressing.

What is the most expensive item in your wardrobe? PROBABLY an Alexander McQueen shearling coat which I bought years ago. It's really beautiful and I always get lots of compliments when I wear it.

What has been your biggest fashion faux pas? IN MY 20s, I was really into experimenting with my look, so every week I would be trying out new styles. I would wear a lot of vintage, so one week I would wear Army and the next week I would wear a hippy boho look, so I'm sure during this phase of my life there were lots of fashion faux pas. But equally I think it's important to experiment with your style as it helps you refine your look.

Who is your favourite designer? I LOVE pieces that have a point of view and a difference. My favourite brands include Rick Owens, Haider Ackermann, Margiela and The Row.

Which is your favourite high street store? COS is great for basics.

What is your best style tip? BE COMFORTABLE in your own skin and dress with confidence. Know your own style and what suits your body shape. Don't try too hard, effortless style is always best.
