ed ANYONE BUT IVY POCKET by Caleb Krisp (published by Bloomsbury, priced PS6.99, available January 14) IVY POCKET is a 12-year-old lady's maid and a walking disaster who doesn't see herself this way at all.
She thinks she is extremely talented and charming with the enticing beauty of a "banker's daughter, or at the very least, a cheesemaker's niece".
For the chance to "swim in money", Ivy agrees to take the Duchess of Trinity's most treasured (and possibly cursed) possession - the Clock Diamond - from Paris to England, and to put it around the neck of the revolting Matilda Butterfield on her 12th birthday.
But acquiring supposedly harmless bosom buddies and some instant enemies on the way, including a grumpy old grouch who has a cesspit of unpleasantness where her heart should be, is not a good way to go. Soon Ivy finds herself at the heart of a mystery involving murder, mischief and many dead ends.
Will Ivy manage to uncover the truth before Matilda's birthday ball? re Set in Victorian times, this thrilling book is sure to be a hit with young readers. Ivy - although not always a reliable narrator - makes for an outspoken and feisty heroine.
Author Caleb Krisp brings a lot of humour to this gothic tale which also incorporates myths and legends.
Fans will want to read more adventures of the delightful Ivy Pocket.
