A FORMER teacher who runs a Liverpool bakery was banned from returning to the classroom after he was convicted of downloading child porn.

Samuel Henley, 33, who runs the Baltic Bakehouse, was convicted in February of six counts of making (downloading) indecent photos of children. He was given a two-year conditional discharge and placed on the Sex Offender's Register.

The General Teaching Council for Scotland held a Fitness to Teach panel last week to determine whether Mr Henley, who had worked as a maths teacher at Scottish boarding school Gordonstoun, should be allowed to return to the profession.

Gordonstoun, in Moray, was attended by the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles and other senior royals.

The Fit to Teach hearing, which Mr Henley did not attend, found he was unfit to teach and should be removed from the teaching register, A presenting officer told the panel no evidence had been provided about whether Mr Henley's behaviour could be remedied.

The panel report said: "She submitted that, in any case, even if the behaviour had been remedied, the panel must also consider the wider public interest.

"In this case, in her submission, the behaviour is incompatible with being a registered teacher and a finding of unfitness is necessary in order to protect the public interest."

Mr Henley was removed from the teaching register and would have to reapply and face another hearing if he wanted to teach again.

The panel ruled he would not be able to re-apply for two years.

The report said: "There was no evidence available to the panel about the previous history or character of the respondent.

"In any event, the panel considered that a shorter time period was inappropriate due to the seriousness of the conviction and that this period of time was necessary in order to protect the public interest."

The Baltic Bakehouse, run by Mr Henley and sister Grace, is an artisan bakery with branches in Allerton Road and Bridgewater Street.

The bakery declined to comment.
