Printer Friendly GAME FOR A LIFE?

Byline: Carol Vorderman

TO most people, using a home computer for entertainment means just one thing - games.

But there's more to PC life than shooting monsters and the latest Media Centre computers are complete digital entertainment centres.

Almost all PCs can play music CDs and many will give you hi-fi quality sound. Most also come with a DVD drive so you can see the latest movies and enjoy the extra facilities of this new media. If you aim to watch a lot of films it's worthwhile buying a PC with a 17in or 19in screen.

An all-in-one TV card in the computer lets you watch TV on your monitor. Now you can even record TV programmes to your hard drive and pause live TV then carry on watching from where you left off. Add a DVD writer to burn your personal copies on DVD.

Digital cameras and camcorders are here to stay and now budding Steven Spielbergs can connect them to the PC and create their own movies, complete with soundtracks and graphics.

To get the best out of all these multimedia programs you should go for a PC with a fast processor (at least a 3GHz or equivalent), a good quality display card with lots of graphics RAM and a high performance sound card - one with six-channel audio is best as they offer a home theatre sound experience. You'll also need a large hard drive as sound and video files can eat up disk space.
