Byline: Ian Malley

WE'VE given Bits & PCs a rest this week but so that Ian Malley doesn't get too used to putting his feet up and soaking up the sun in the back garden, we sent him a load of readers' problems to solve.

In between lighting the barbie and opening another bottle of Chablis, Ian has managed to solve each one.

JEAN EVANS ASKS... How do I save on to JPEG?

I usually save documents or pictures which I have scanned in ``My Documents'', but the only folder types which are available are a TIFF Document, a Fax Document or a Bitmap Image.

The only computer programmes I seem to have offering JPEG are MSpaint and MS Powerpoint. Is Bitmap Image similar to JPEG and suitable for sending by e-mail?

IAN ANSWERS... Normally, when you select ``save as'', there should be the option to save as a ``JPEG'' available to you. If that option is not available then you need to look for the ``export'' option, which should live in the ``file'' menu.

Select File>Export and when the save dialogue appears, click the drop-down and select JPEG.

PAUL FOX WRITES... My sound card, which is fitted directly on to my motherboard, does not work.

When I run ``add new hardware'' on Windows 98, it does not find the sound card, so I can't install the driver for it.

I've gone to settings/ control panel/multi media/ audio and it says no device is fitted. My driver for the device is on another CD than windows, but no matter what I do I cant get it to work.

IAN ANSWERS... When you start Windows, the ``add new hardware wizard'' should automatically sense your uninstalled sound card, and attempt to install it.

If Windows is not sensing your sound card, the motherboard is not aware the sound card is there.

The easiest way to solve this problem is to unplug the sound card from the motherboard, re-plug it in and restart Windows.

The wizard will run and after placing the driver disk into the CDRom drawer, the drivers should install.
