best day out; The Dylan Thomas Festival @ Dylan Thomas Centre, Swansea, Tuesday to November 1.

Byline: Compiled by Nathan Bevan

"I HAVE had 18 straight whiskies, I believe this to be a record," said Dylan Thomas, shortly before falling from his bar stool in NewYork's slovenly-lovely Chelsea Hotel for the very last time.

Me? I once drank half a shot of Bourbon and then tried to takemy trousers off over my head. So, while I can't quite appreciate the great artist's determination to drink himself to death - which he amply achieved in November 1953 - the work he left behind, wonderfully coloured by his Celtic melancholy and said penchant for the hard stuff, is a different story.

Good job this festival's about that rather than his boozing, or else there'd be a lot of pickled people sloshing about the place.
