belly ache; US OPEN Lowry fuming at 'Fatty Three-Ball'.

Byline: JAMES NURSEY

HEAVYWEIGHT Irishman Shane Lowry has blasted US Open organisers, accusing them of making fun of his waistline.

US Open chiefs handpick three-balls for their showpiece event and Lowry, 27, has taken exception to being put in the same group as fellow scalebreakers Kevin Stadler and Brendon de Jonge.

"I am annoyed," fumed Lowry, the world No.71, who came through qualifying at Walton Heath and carded an opening 73.

"I think it is a bit cheeky of the USGA in making the draw the way they did.

"Someone's bright idea - put the three big guys together! I think it's unfair.

"It is definitely not drawn out of the hat, that's for sure. I just hope we don't get stick from the galleries, as what they did is making a mockery of us.

"I spoke to Graeme McDowell and he thinks I should say something to the USGA about it.

"I have always had a bit of extra weight."

World No.59 Stadler, the son of former Masters champion and 13-time PGA Tour winner Craig Stadler - dubbed 'The Walrus' - was also unimpressed.

He said: "I think the USGA is a little mean and insensitive. They are invoking their five-year-old sense of humour.

"I don't care though. It's not like I don't pretend that I'm not a fat-ass."

But world No.80 De Jonge, who shot an impressive opening 68, said: "I was actually pretty amused by it. I wasn't offended at all."

USGA managing director of rules and competitions Jeff Hall insisted: "It certainly wasn't the case that we were trying to do anything.

"If you look at the three, they're all comparable as far as the world rankings."

Lowry added: "I have worked on my fitness, but people don't always see it."

He was sweating on making the cut last night after carding successive 73s to stand six-over.

But the row did not affect De Jonge, who followed up his opening 68 with a 70.

While Stadler will also be around for the weekend after an impressive 68, despite opening with a 77.
