Rihanna raised the bar when she went for dinner in a rather risque trench coat with (gasp!) nothing underneath it.

The timeless classic is usually associated with understated elegance but Rihanna has turned the fashion rule book on its head.

She's not the first to cause a bit of a stir in a trench, though. Do you remember when Victoria Beckham first arrived in LA and she was spotted visiting schools for the boys with nothing underneath hers? Naughty Mrs B caused quite a sensation.

I recommend a slightly less out-there take on the look. Try teaming a classic mac with jeans and a T-shirt or throwing one over a dress.

Serious style without the shock factor.

ask Tess DEAR TESS, I have been wearing platform shoes for what seems like an age but I keep reading that they aren't fashionable any more. I love them because they make my legs look longer and I have loads of pairs of them in just about every colour.

I don't like the sound of the new mid heels that everyone keeps talking about because I am only 5ft 1, so what should I be wearing? JASMINE, 39, NEWCASTLE.

HI JASMINE, Don't worry, you don't need to ditch the heels. It's all about dainty, strappy shoes this season. I am with you on the heel front - if you are going on a night out stick to high heels and leave the mid heels to the Duchess of Cambridge.

I have fallen in love with these shoes from River Island. Elegant and chic, they look like a really expensive, designer shoe. They come in lilac and black and lime green and snakeskin and I want both pairs!
