album of the week.

JON ALLEN Dead Man's Suit ( Monologue) YOU'LL recognise single Going Home - released today - as the folk-pop theme of the Land Rover TV advert, but there's a lot more to British singer-songwriter Jon Allen than that.

His debut album, already an A- list favourite at s 2, is a soft rock shuffle that often recalls The Band or Stealers Wheel, with Allen's subtly soulful vocal backed by a band tighter than a creditcrunch household budget..

Rockier songs such as Down By The River recall early Rod Stewart, Happy Now boasts a dazzling Dave Gilmour-styled guitar solo and Young Man Blues is big, brassy and bold.

Elsewhere, In Your Light could be a Robbie Robertson out-take, Sleeping Soul takes Allen high out of his vocal comfort zone to good effect, and Bad Penny is underpinned by Creedence bayou guitar choogle.

The key to success is the singer's partnership with his band, of whom Hammond organist Rich Milner and guitarist Simon Johnson are outstanding.

This isn't on trend but it is unfashionably, undeniably good. PC
