The US Senate has approved pounds 5.5m for a memorial to civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr on Washington's National Mall, the first monument there to a black person.

The pounds 55m memorial is to be built on a four-acre site next to the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial and the work will begin in November, 2006.

Youth shot

A teenager is recovering in hospital today after being shot in a paramilitary-style attack.

The 17-year-old was shot in both knees on an estate in Bangor.

Sticky idea

Passengers on a broken-down train were shocked when the driver appealed for sticky tape to carry out engine repairs.

The high-speed Midland Mainline train from London St Pancras to Nottingham ground to a halt south of Leicester on Saturday. However, the driver got no response and staff had to wait for a fitter to arrive.
