Zoo row as boss 'retires'.

EDINBURGH Zoo's treasurer has quit in a row over cash - months after helping to secure a pair of giant pandas.

Max Gaunt, the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland's treasurer for nearly four years, is understood to have clashed with other members of the executive board.

Mr Gaunt, a key player in bringing the first giant pandas to the UK in 17 years, is believed to have been unhappy at efforts to splash out up to pounds 1million to revamp the zoo's entrance.

He resigned after the RZSS board met to discuss the sponsorship of pandas Tian Tian and Yangguang, due at the zoo in September.

Bosses said Mr Gaunt had "retired".

But he is not believed to have stepped down from any of his other roles, including as chief executive of his own management firm.

Mr Gaunt said last night: "It is a confidential matter between myself and the RZSS."
