Ziff-Davis Announces Winners of Sixth Annual Shareware Awards; ZDTV, PC Magazine, Family PC, and Computer Gaming World Select the Year's Best Titles from The ZDNet Software Library.

TAMPA, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 27, 1999--

Spotlighting the best new shareware programs from the past year, Ziff-Davis (NYSE: ZD) today announced winners of the Sixth Annual Ziff-Davis Shareware Awards, honored here on Thursday, July 22 at a gala ceremony during the Shareware Industry Conference. This year's winners were chosen by software editors at ZDTV, PC Magazine, Family PC, and Computer Gaming World, from a list of nominees selected by the editorial team that operates the popular ZDNet Software Library (http://www.zdnet.com/swlib).

Regarded as the most coveted awards for shareware authors, the Ziff-Davis Shareware Awards recognize the highest quality and most innovative shareware programs of the year. The ZDNet shareware team first screens the latest programs for possible placement in the ZDNet Software Library, which contains over 34,000 titles of the best available software. Selected programs are then virus checked, rated and reviewed, and categorized in the fully searchable Software Library, which offers editorial guidance and a complete list of shareware vital statistics before visitors download.

"The number of shareware titles now available is staggering," said Preston Gralla, executive editor at ZDNet. "Shareware authors consistently produce some of the best programs out there, making the awards selection process more difficult each year. We enjoy recognizing the entrepreneurial spirit of shareware developers with these awards, and witness their success firsthand since we select the programs that are available for download from the ZDNet Software Library."

In April, the ZDNet Software Library team passed its finalist selections from the April 1998 - April 1999 timeframe to appropriate editors at Family PC, who rated personal finance, family, and household programs; PC Magazine, who rated business and finance, Internet and personal productivity shareware; Computer Gaming World, who rated games; and ZDTV, who rated utilities programs. These editors chose shareware titles from specific categories, as well as one overall "Program of the Year" for each broad category. The overall category winners for this year were:

-- PC Magazine: SpamKiller

-- Computer Gaming World: Chron X

-- FamilyPC: AceReader

-- ZDTV: DeskNotes

In addition, ZDTV will give demonstrations of the winning shareware on "Call for Help" (www.zdtv.com/callforhelp) which airs at 7 p.m. EDT(4 p.m. PDT), and PC Magazine will feature a story on the Shareware Awards, focusing on the products selected by the magazine as finalists, in the September 21 issue.
