Zarif Refutes Hook's Claim about US Role in 1953 Coup in Iran.
Summary: TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif blasted US Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook for baseless claims, advising him to read the US National Security Archive to understand the role of Washington in the 1953 coup against Iran's nationalist government of Mohammad Mossadeq.
Zarif, in reaction to Brian Hook's claim that CIA had no part in the 1953 coup against the Iranian government, suggested him to read the report by the US National Security Archive on the matter.
In a tweet on Tuesday, he shared a link of a report by the US National Security Archive which provided documents confirming the CIA's role in the 1953 coup against the Iranian government.
Zarif said he was sharing the link "for those who are either unaware of, or willfully revisionist on, the history of US involvement in the 1953 Coup against the democratically-elected government of Iran".
In an earlier tweet on Monday, Zarif had stressed that his country put an end to the US and Britain's meddling over 40 years ago.
Zarif referred to the 1953 coup orchestrated by the US and Britain in Iran, noting that the Iranians ended their interference by the Islamic Revolution in 1979.
"66 years ago today, a coup instigated by the US and the UK overthrew the democratically-elected Government of Iran," he wrote on his twitter page.
"This atrocity followed years of 'maximum pressure' on Iranians,"
"Our people put an end to such interference in 1979," Zarif noted.
"Time for some to deal with this reality," he underlined.
The 1953 coup d'etat (known in Iran as the 28 Mordad coup) was the overthrow of the democratically elected government of Iran, and its head of government Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddeq on August 19, 1953, orchestrated by the United Kingdom (under the name 'Operation Boot') and the United States (under the name Pejak Project).
The coup saw the formation of a military government under Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, who progressed from a constitutional monarch to an authoritarian one who relied heavily on United States' support to hold on to power until his own overthrow in February 1979.
