Zamora to Gomez: Accept election recall notice issued by Comelec.
By Jel Santos
Former San Juan Vice Mayor Francis Zamora is challenging incumbent Mayor Guia Gomez to accept the election recall notice issued by the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
Recently Comelec, in an en banc decision, found the petition for recall against Gomez "sufficient in form and substance."
Guia, the former partner of Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada, went against former Vice Mayor Francis Zamora in the 2016 mayoral elections. She was declared winner of the mayoral race after garnering 28, 828 votes, while Zamora had 27, 604 votes.
"Accept the election recall notice from the Comelec so that they could verify the signatures of the San Juan people who signed the petition for recall," Zamora said.
The supporters of Zamora were able to attain around 30, 000 signatures, which they submitted to the Comelec to back the petition against Gomez.
"The Comelec only need to verify 15, 000 signatures to push through another election. My supporters provided about 30, 000," he explained.
Zamora has accused Gomez of trying to delay the process by simply evading to accept the election notice recall.
The former vice mayor even said the decision of the Comelec en banc is unanimous, having a vote of 4-0.
"Mayor Gomez should accept the notice if she strongly believes that the people of San Juan still wants her as mayor," he said.
Meanwhile, the Public Information Office (PIO) said Gomez has filed legitimate leaves even before the notice came out.
Also, a PIO staff said Gomez is not afraid to fight Zamora again.
Zamora is a member of President Duterte's party, PDP-LABAN.
