ZINC CORPORATION OF AMERICA SUSPENDS REFINERY

NEW YORK, June 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Zinc Corporation of America (ZCA) announced today that its Bartlesville, Okla., electrolytic zinc refinery will temporarily suspend production for an extended environmental retrofitting and for certain maintenance and process modifications. The production outage, scheduled to begin in September, will continue for approximately one year. ZCA is arranging metal sources and will continue to supply its customers during this period.
Severely depressed zinc prices are currently causing all zinc smelters to absorb large losses. Exports of non-ferrous metals from Russia, CIS and Eastern European countries have caused a virtual collapse of most non-ferrous metal markets. ZCA said these circumstances have forced it to temporarily idle its 60,000 ton per year Bartlesville zinc refinery and to utilize the opportunity to make certain environmental improvements and other modifications to the plant.
ZCA is the largest zinc metal producer in the United States and the largest zinc oxide producer in the world. ZCA operates a large pyrometallurgical zinc smelter, producing metal, oxide, dust and powder in Monaca, Pa. (near Pittsburgh), a zinc mining facility in Northern New York State, and the Bartlesville zinc refinery. The Pennsylvania and New York facilities will be unaffected by the Bartlesville outage.
