ZILA SIX MONTH SALES AND EARNINGS BREAK RECORDS

PHOENIX, Ariz., March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- In the second quarter of fiscal year 1993 (ended January 31), sales for Zila, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZILA) increased 70 percent over the same period in the prior year and contributed to a six-month net earnings total which exceeded earnings for any full fiscal year in the company's history.
Net sales of $1,169,066 for the quarter compare to sales of $686,250 for the same period in FY 1992. Net income of $109,066 for the quarter contrasts with a net loss of $94,597 a year ago.
Record sales for the first six months of FY 1993 were $2,488,361, an increase of 31 percent over $1,899,337 for the same period a year ago. Six month net income was $353,152, an increase of 462 percent over $62,858 for the same period in FY 1992. Earnings per share for the first six months of FY 1993 were $.02.
The balance sheet continues to reflect the company's growing strength. On Jan. 1, 1993, net working capital was $2,261,746 and the current ratio was a very favorable 8.2 to 1. Zila's only long-term debt is the mortgage on its headquarters building.
According to Joseph Hines, president of the Phoenix-based health care products marketer, several factors have influenced the company's rapidly expanding sales volume. These include the successful launch of PeriGel(R) (a twin-tube baking soda, fluoride and hydrogen peroxide dentifrice) and DermaFlex(R) (an anesthetic "gel bandage"), and the increasing popularity of the company's established oral care products -- Zilactin(R), liquid Zilactol(R) and ZilaDent(R).
Mr. Hines said that significant progress has been made in preparing for the introduction of OraScan(TM), the first oral cancer diagnostic aid, in the United Kingdom and the United States. OraScan will be introduced to Canadian dentists at the annual British Columbia Dental Meeting, sponsored by the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia, March 5 and 6.
The company has scheduled meetings with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and British regulatory officials in March and April, respectively, to review OraScan data prior to final submission for marketing approval.
