ZILA, INC., TO ENTER TOOTHPASTE MARKET WITH NEW PERIGEL CARE SYSTEM
 PHOENIX, April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Zila, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZILA), today announced it is entering the $1.5 billion U.S. toothpaste market with a May introduction of new PeriGel, an oral care system for teeth and gums.
 A carton of PeriGel contains two tubes -- one a baking soda paste with fluoride, the other a hydrogen peroxide gel. Equal amounts from each tube are applied to the toothbrush. At concentrations of 59 percent baking soda and 3 percent hydrogen peroxide, PeriGel delivers the highest approved levels of these ingredients of any combination product.
 PeriGel generates microscopic oxygen bubbles that penetrate tiny pockets under the gumline, lifting away trapped food particles and destroying harmful bacteria that contribute to periodontal diseases. Mint flavored PeriGel whitens teeth and fights plaque and tartar. It is lower in abrasives than most toothpastes and, because it contains no gumming agents, can be used with electric toothbrushes.
 "The speciality toothpaste market is growing dramatically," said Joseph Hines, president of Zila. "Sales of anti-stain/anti-plaque dentifrices grew 188 percent in 1991 over the prior year. Coupling this with the ADA estimate that periodontal disease affects 80 percent of the population, we are confident that PeriGel will become the product of choice for the dental professional and their primary recommendation to patients," said Hines.
 PeriGel will be sold through drug wholesalers and retail pharmacies, and marketed directly to dentists by Zila. The PeriGel national roll-out will begin in Florida in May 1992.
 Zila is a leader in the oral care market. Its non-prescription Zilactin medicated gel is ranked third in pharmacist recommendations for canker sore and cold sore medications. Zila also markets ZilaDent for cuts and sores caused by dentures, braces and other dental appliances, and Zilactol for treating the first signs of cold sores and fever blisters even before they break out.
 Zila's products are sold by all major drug wholesalers, drug chains and independent pharmacies. Distribution is now expanding into food chains as well. Zila's rapid sales growth is attributed to its intensive professional-oriented marketing campaign, with medical journal advertising, direct mail and high-profile convention participation among dentists, pharmacists and other medical professionals nationwide. Internationally, Zila sales are generated by its licensee, Bausch & Lomb.
