ZIGGY MARLEY AND 'PARKER LEWIS CAN'T LOSE' STAR TROY SLATEN SHOW SUPPORT FOR THE 2,000 YOUTH ENVIRONMENTALISTS AT GLOBAL YOUTH FORUM
UNITED NATIONS, May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- On May 15, Ziggy Marley, Troy Slaten and a host of other notables including astronaut Charles Bolden will be on hand to salute the efforts of more than 2,000 youth environmentalists gathered at the closing ceremony at the United Nations for the Global Youth Forum. The closing ceremony, which wraps up two days of forum activities, showcases speakers and performers whose cultural and ethnic diversity is representative of the diverse backgrounds of forum attendees.
The Global Youth Forum highlights the vital contributions being made by the ever-increasing numbers of committed young people working around the world to build an environmentally sustainable future. The forum allows these youth to communicate to one another their experiences in a variety of environmental projects -- from preservation and conservation to waste management and recycling.
Organized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Global Youth Forum is a cornerstone of its Outreach Programme. The Global Youth Forum, now in its eighth year, encourages youth to share their experiences of community level environmental action through talks, workshops, exhibitions and performance.
"The Global Youth Forum represents the level of commitment to and knowledge about the environment among youth of today," said Jane M. Hutterly, director, Environmental Actions Worldwide of S.C. Johnson, corporate patron of Global Youth Forum. "In a time when youth are often faced with difficult personal choices, it's important to showcase members of this generation who have chosen to ensure the sustainable growth of the planet through their individual and collective efforts."
The Global Youth Forum promotes greater awareness of environmental issues, encourages direct contact between children and youth from different parts of the world, and contributes toward development of the leadership skills and confidence that will help youth assume an even greater role in caring for the earth as they become the leaders of tomorrow. Young people learn about UNEP's work and its unique role as a resource of the latest and most comprehensive information on environmental issues. UNEP in turn gains insights into the continually expanding grassroots role of the environmental youth movement.
Corporate patron of the UNEP's Global Youth Forum is S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc. (more commonly known as SC Johnson Wax). Additional corporate funding of this year's event is provided by Amway, Goodway Tools Corporation, Kendall-Futuro Company, Lever Brothers Company, Save the Sea Campaign Committee of Japan, and Soka Gakkai Youth Peace Conference.
