ZF RECEIVES MAJOR CONTRACT FROM MERCEDES BENZ ALABAMA PLANT

 VERNON HILLS, Ill., Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- ZF Friedrichshafen AG has contracted with Mercedes Benz Project, Inc., to develop and supply ready-to-install front and rear axle modules for the new Mercedes Benz four- wheel drive passenger vehicle. Annual production of approximately 60,000 vehicles will start in early 1997 at the automaker's Tuscaloosa, Ala., plant.
 The contract will provide for ready-to-assemble axles from ZF throughout the entire vehicle production cycle.
 ZF is a leading worldwide manufacturer of transmissions, steering, chassis and axle components. The company's plants in the U.S. include a transmission factory in Georgia. A management spokesman for ZF said the Mercedes Benz contract is another decisive step by the company to increase penetration of the American market. A new ZF assembly facility to be developed near the Mercedes Benz plant will provide some 200 new jobs. ZF is currently looking for a suitable location and expects to reach a decision early next year, according to the announcement.
 The Mercedes Benz contract makes ZF Friedrichshafen AG on of the first manufacturers to supply ready-to-assemble modules in the crucial market for transmission, steering, chassis and axle components.
 For this project, ZF will combine major components produced by its various divisions with others purchased in North America. The North American division of ZF Friederichshafen AG, ZF Industries, Inc., has the responsibility for the new ZF assembly plant.
