ZEOS ANNOUNCES REVOLUTIONARY NEW SUBNOTE COMPUTER; PC WEEK CALLS NEW SYSTEM 'THE BEST OF THE NEW CROP OF LIGHTWEIGHT FULL-FEATURED MACHINES'
MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Leveraging off one of the industry's best reputations in notebook computers, ZEOS International Ltd. (NASDAQ: ZEOS) announced today the immediate availability of a revolutionary new subnotebook computer system called the "Contenda." The new Contenda weights in at less than four pounds yet carries all the important features of a desktop Windows workstation. Starting at only $1,495, the system employs a powerful Intel 386SL microprocessor running at 25MHz. It comes standard with an 80 megabyte (MB) hard disk drive, 2MB of RAM, a 7.4-inch diagonal VGA backlit screen and a built-in track ball. Options include additional memory up to 10 megabytes. According to Greg Herrick, chairman and CEO of ZEOS, the Contenda is intended to compete head to head with other subnote product offerings such as Dell Computer Corporation's 320SLi and Gateway 2000's Handbook. "Frankly, we consider the Contenda to be one generation ahead of our competitors' product," Herrick said. "The Contenda has more features than the Gateway Handbook and costs much less than the Dell 320SLi. It's a shear pleasure to use." ZEOS's new subnote system measures 9.7 inches by 6.1 inches and weighs 3.9 pounds. The keyboard is a full 80 keys with a desktop style look and feel. It also features an embedded numeric keypad. A flexible power management system offers battery life of up to four hours. "The Contenda is perfect for businesspeople who want to travel light, appreciate desktop style computing power and yet want an affordable system," Herrick stated. In addition, the Contenda is the first Windows workstation in a subnote size. It has a beautiful backlit VGA screen which is painfully missing from both the Dell and the Gateway systems. Today's edition of PC WEEK carries a review article on the new ZEOS Contenda. In that article the reviewer notes, "When it comes to screen clarity and brightness, the Contenda wins by a mile. Its sharp, crisp 64 gray-scale backlit VGA screen makes the (Dell) 320SLi's look pale in comparison." Commenting further on the ZEOS Contenda as a powerful Windows subnote, the PC WEEK reviewer said, "The Contenda includes a 25MHz 386SL-based processor allowing it to run Windows and OS/2, while the Gateway plods along on a Chips and Technologies Inc. 80186 emulator. The Dell unit also includes a 386SL processor, but it's the slower 20MHz version." The PC WEEK article concluded " ... the Contenda is the best yet of the new crop of lightweight, full-featured machines ... if you're looking for a subnotebook and want to make next to no compromises, then the $1,495 Zeos International Ltd. Contenda is your best bet." "We're not going to argue with the experts, the Contenda is the best subnote yet," said Rick Apple, vice president of marketing at ZEOS. "With all its extra features, it's a road warrior's dream. The built-in pointing device means there's no need to carry an external mouse. You can keep in touch with our optional built-in fax/modem. The Contenda's industry standard serial, parallel and video ports mean you can easily attach external equipment such as a standard VGA color monitor, printer and more. For those really long trips we offer extra, lightweight snap- in, snap-out battery packs as well. "Let's not forget service and reliability either," Apple continued. "In their February issue, PC Magazine surveyed 17,000 of their readers on the subject of service and reliability and the results should be of interest to anyone contemplating a new system purchase." In a summary of the survey results, the magazine said, "Among laptop makers, Compaq Computer Corp. and Zeos International sit alone at our highest level of reader satisfaction." In addition ZEOS was the only manufacturer who rated "Excellent" in both the desktop and the notebook product categories. According to Apple, the Contenda is the only product among its immediate competitors that offers 24-hour-a-day toll-free technical support, 365 days a year. Upgrade packages include additional RAM up to 10MB, external floppy drive, Microsoft DOS, Windows and Lotus Organizer, custom-fitted carrying case, additional batteries and internal fax/modem. Customers interested in purchasing the new ZEOS Contenda subnotebook computer may call the company's toll-free sales line at 800-423-5891 which is staffed 24 hours a day.
