ZENITH LICENSES PATENTED TUNER TECHNOLOGY, EXPECTS
 $15-MILLION-PLUS IN ANNUAL ROYALTY REVENUES
GLENVIEW, Ill., June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Major manufacturers of color television sets and video cassette recorders are taking licenses under Zenith Electronics Corporation's (NYSE: ZE) patents for tuner technology, the company announced today.
Based on 1992 estimated industry unit sales volume, the company expects to collect annual royalty revenues of more than $15 million on its U.S. tuning system patents.
Collected and accrued royalty payments in excess of $10 million (including past royalties) are expected to be reflected in the company's second quarter results, which will be announced in mid-July. The royalties will not be sufficient, however, to offset the sizable loss expected for the second quarter. (Zenith had announced that it expects to report a loss for the quarter.)
Zenith holds key patents used in tuning systems in essentially all cable-compatible TVs and VCRs on the market today. The patent licenses expire in 2003; terms of the licensing agreements were not disclosed.
