ZENITH DATA SYSTEMS WINS $700 MILLION DESKTOP IV CONTRACT
BUFFALO GROVE, Ill., Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Zenith Data Systems, a Bull company, yesterday was named by the U.S. Air Force as the recipient of the U.S. Government's Desktop IV contract.
With a government-estimated potential value of $740 million for up to 300,000 systems, Desktop IV is expected to be among the largest personal computer contracts ever awarded by the federal government.
Under the terms of the three-year contract, ZDS will be able to supply desktop PCs (plus related monitors, peripherals and software) to the U.S. Air Force, Army, Navy and Defense Logistics Agency, as well as to civilian agencies.
"We're absolutely delighted that we'll have the opportunity to extend our leadership position in the federal market," said Enrico Pesatori, ZDS president and chief executive officer.
"We believe we won this contract because of our excellent product offerings, our outstanding performance on Desktop I and Desktop II, our superior responsiveness during Desert Storm, and our long-term commitment to the government market," he said.
The Desktop IV contract was awarded to Zenith Data Systems by the Standard Systems Center (SSC) at Gunter Air Force Station in Montgomery, Ala. Initially awarded in November 1991, the Desktop IV competition was reopened in January 1992.
PCs to be supplied under the Desktop IV contract will be assembled at ZDS' principal manufacturing facility in St. Joseph, Mich.
ZDS also held the Desktop I contract from 1983 to 1986 and the Desktop II contract from 1986 to 1989, and continues to market its products actively to the government through requirements contracts and the General Services Administration schedule.
"The U.S. Government is still ZDS' single largest customer, and our installed base -- about 37 percent -- is by far the largest in the federal market," Pesatori said. "In fact, there are close to 700,000 ZDS systems in use at Defense Department and civilian agencies around the world."
"As a result, our government customers know they can rely on us for cost-effective, high-quality products. For example, during Desert Storm, we shipped thousands of systems that have since proved they can withstand challenging environmental conditions. And most were delivered within 48 hours of order," he said.
Zenith Data Systems, a Bull company, is a leading supplier of notebook and desktop PCs, servers and related peripherals. ZDS has its headquarters in Buffalo Grove, Ill.; engineering facilities in St. Joseph, Mich., Santa Clara, Calif., and Billerica, Mass.; sales locations in more than 30 countries; and its Federal Systems sales and support office in Herndon, Va.
ZDS has annual worldwide revenues of more than $1 billion, with approximately 10 percent of its sales coming from the federal government.
